1. Most famous film directors.

Do you like films? Do you enjoy the movies? You probably know the names of the leading actors, but do you know who directed your favourite films?

Most people know one or two directors, today we are going to read about five of the most influential ones.

  • Martin Scorsese
  • George Lucas
  • Steven Spielberg
  • James Cameron
  • Quentin Tarantino

All of them are famous for having developed their unique style.

2. Martin Scorsese

Martin Charles Scorsese was born on November 17, 1942, in Queens, New York City. His mother was Catherine Scorsese and his father was Charles Scorsese. His grandparents came from Palermo, Sicily. He grew in Little Italy, a neighbourhood in NY.

He studied at the New York University's School of Film. He worked as an assistant director and also as an editor.

He has worked with Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio many times! But only in 2015, he could make them work together in a short film. He has directed at least 18 films, and for those films, he has had 80 nominations for the Oscar Awards, 56 Golden Globe nominations and 84 BAFTA nominations.

His most famous films include Gangs of New York, The Aviator and Hugo.

3. George Lucas

He was born on May 14, 1944, in the USA. He is mostly known for his franchises STAR WARS and INDIANA JONES.

He studied at the University of Southern California and he graduated in 1967. Ten years later he started his world-famous Star Wars. Then in 1980 and 1983, she produced the next two Star Wars sequels.

Then in 1981, he and his friend Steven Spielberg created the Indiana Jones trilogy. In 1999, he came up with the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

4. Steven Spielberg

"Undoubtedly one of the most influential film personalities in the history of film, Steven Spielberg is perhaps Hollywood's best-known director and one of the wealthiest filmmakers in the world. Spielberg has countless big grossing, critically acclaimed credits to his name, as a producer, director and writer."

Steven Spielberg has made films about many themes and genres. He has made science fiction and adventure films as well as films about the Holocaust, civil rights, war and terrorism.

His first important film was Jaws in 1975. Another great film is ET the extraterrestrial (1982).

He worked with George Lucas in the development of Indiana Jones.

Spielberg has won three Academy Awards. He has been nominated for seven Academy Awards for the category of Best Director, winning two of them (Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan), and ten of the films he directed were up for the Best Picture Oscar (Schindler's List won).

5. James Cameron

James Cameron is a very famous film director known for some of the biggest box-office hits of all time. He was born on August 16, 1954, in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Canada. He was a real science-fiction fan as a child, so he went on to produce and direct films including The Terminator, Aliens and Avatar. He has received numerous "Oscar" Academy Awards and nominations for his productions.

In 1997, Titanic became the first film to earn more than $1 billion and won 14 Academy Award nominations. Cameron took home three Oscars himself for the project: Best Director, Best Film Editing and Best Picture.

6. Quentin Tarantino

Quentin Tarantino was born on March 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee but he moved to California in 1967. He is the only child of Connie McHugh, who is part Cherokee and part Irish, and actor Tony Tarantino.

While he was working in a video store, he wrote the scripts of Natural Born Killers and True Romance.

In 1992 he directed his first film Reservoir Dogs

In 1994 he directed Pulp Fiction which was both a commercial and critical success. In the United States, it earned over $108 million at the box office, becoming the first independent film to do so. Pulp Fiction won the prestigious Palme d'Or Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1994 and received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director.

Many people say that his most popular film is Kill Bill.
