What is a listening task?

A listening task is a listening activity done in order to achieve a goal e.g. listening to directions in order to get to a place, listening to instructions in order to do an activity, listening to a lecturer in order to take some notes and learn, listening to instructions on the telephone in order to make a reservation, listening to a phone message in order to call somebody back, listening to the TV news in order to be informed, listening to a TV ad in order to buy something, listening to a friend in a conversation in order to have fun or be affiliated,  listening to a new acquaintance at a disco in order to socialize,  listening to a speaker announcement at a bus station in order to get on a bus, listening to a song in order to relax, etc.
