ACTIVITY 7

Listen to transfer: Listen and colour

Main goals

Activating prior knowledge. Using bottom-up strategies. Listening to colour.

Time: 45 Minutes

Materials: worksheet and script to be read by teacher.

Level: easy

Technical requirements: offline

Pre-listening

Ask students to match “clothing words” to the corresponding image.  Cards must be printed in advance. teacher spreads cards on a desk, students take turns to stick pairs on the board.

If the teacher realizes that extra practice is necessary, just removes “word cards” from the board and asks students to either point to the corresponding drawings or picking the cards as the pieces of clothings are called out.

While-listening

Activity 1

Explain that you will read a description and they will have to color according to the description.

Here you have to options:

  1. Ask students to colour as they listen to you.
  2. Ask students to take notes. Then, form pairs to share their notes and colour.

Finally, check students’ work.

Activity 2

Variation 1

Ask volunteers to take turns and  describe another character for their peers to colour. Provide an example on the board:

“Sally is wearing XXXX”

 There are two options:

  1. Print and colour the second character and students just dictate what they see.
  2. Print the second character and students must invent the description and dictate it to their peers.

Variation 2

Explain what an “information gap” activity is.  Elicit strategies necessary to succeed in this type of activities:

  1. Read instructions carefully.
  2. Think what information you need.
  3. Predict what the speaker will tell you.
  4. Plan your actions: (Colour as you hear or take notes)
  5. Listen carefully.
  6. Ask for clarification if necessary.

Form pairs and give each pair a set of ‘Character 2” copies. Ask students to listen to each other and complete their pictures by colouring according to their peers’ instructions.
Write an example on the board:

‘Sally is wearing XXX.’

Post-listening

Discuss strategies used. Use the self-evaluation form.
