Speaking Negotiating

Main goals: To develop fluency. To suggest, agree and disagree 

Time: 45 minutes

Materials: printed discussion worksheet

Level of difficulty: medium / hard

Technical requirements: offline

Warm-up/pre-speaking

  • Play a memory game. Explain the rules, every player adds a new sport to the list.

The teacher says: “ I watched ESPN and I saw people playing soccer..”

Ask a students to repeat and add another sport: e.g.

      “ I watched ESPN and I saw people playing soccer and tennis”

Speaking:

  • Set the situation:

            Your school is planning to develop a new sports programme. Look at the options they are considering. Work with a partner and choose which  two sports you would enjoy doing.

  • You can use these phrases:       

Suggesting

  • I think we should…….
  • Why don’t we….?
  • I don't think we should….
  • How about ……?
  • I believe that ……………
  • I enjoy ……
  • What do you think …?

Agreeing and disagreeing

  • That’s a great idea.
  • I totally agree with you.
  • That’s a good idea, but……
  • I agree to a certain extent.
  • I am not sure.
  • Really?
  • Me too.

Post-speaking

  • The class can keep a record on the most popular options.
  • Alternatively, a student can keep track of the different choices on board.
