Reading to learn new information: organizing texts

Main goal

Using new digital resources: apps QR reader, planning, managing meaningful information, selecting information critically and note-taking.

Group: 3rd year students

Time: 45 minutes

Materials: QRs on Jennifer Lopez biography, from: http://www.biography.com/people/jennifer-lopez-9542231#awesm=~oEFooGWY2gmbL2

Stages:

Pre-reading:

1. Ask what a QR is. Let students guess what the acronym means.  (quick response)

2. Explain what QR stands for if necessary . Let students download the app (or ask in advance).

3. Tell students they are going to use QRs to read about a famous woman from the US.  Elicit names and keep record on the board.

While-reading.

4. Hand out the QRs. Ask students to scan them and put them in logical order. 

5. Students  read their parts aloud.

 

6. Remind students that they should ask for clarification if necessary and /or use online dictionaries.

7. Ask students to complete the timeline using the information on their phones.

 

8. Remind students of the importance of highlighting key words.

9. Encourage students to explain how to fill in a timeline. (read the paragraph again, underline dates, choose relevant information, write clauses)

10. Set working time and monitor while students work. 

11. Ask students to compare the different timelines and to agree on one to show the teacher.

12. Students read their work aloud.

After-reading

Depending on how motivated students are,  they may create their own QR with information about J Lo in the present.
